Train to Win!

Several years ago, I was house sitting for a friend. I saw that he had a bathroom scale, so I decided to weigh myself. I was shocked by what I saw! I was the heaviest I had ever been in my entire life. I decided that I needed to change. I needed to be more disciplined in how I lived my life. I began exercising regularly and, with the help of an app, controlling what I ate. After about a year, I hit my weight goal! But I didn’t get there by being passive. It took a lot of discipline and work.

In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Paul uses a race metaphor to encourage us in how we should be living our lives. He says that every athlete that competes in a race trains for it. And the training they do is intense! He then speaks to their goal. He says that they do it for a crown that will not last. So, he says, if they train in such an intense manner for a crown that will one day fade away, how much more should we train our bodies, minds and souls for a prize that will last all of eternity!

One of our five core values at NewSpring is that “growing people change”. And change takes work. It doesn’t happen magically, overnight. But unlike a medal or trophy, we put forth the effort to train ourselves because we want to honor God with our lives and help others come into a loving relationship with Him. Those are goals that last for eternity.
