Treasure Your Spouse

If you've ever dated long distance, you know it takes intentional effort.

When jobs or colleges pull you apart, when one person is at boot camp while the other stays home, you learn to rely on email and text, to Skype and call when you can, and to treasure the times spent together. Face-to-face time is precious when nurturing a relationship. But something changes when you get married and you see each other all the time.

Ask any couple married for 10 years or more, and they'll confess that sometimes spouses take each other for granted. Less treasuring and more just tolerating. The desire to serve the other person gets dwarfed by the desire to serve one’s self, and out of that selfishness, problems are created.

Selfishness can destroy our marriages if we allow it to. But love, and showing acts of love towards our spouses, can strengthen our marriages. Remembering why we fell in love with them in the first place is a good start, but remembering the challenges we’ve conquered together can be even more meaningful.

Show your spouse love today by serving him or her with selflessness and kindness. Make a new vow to see the treasure that he or she is, the treasure God has given you. As Galatians 5:13 says, “You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love."

Reflect:

  • Would you say you spend more time treasuring your spouse or tolerating your spouse? Why do you think that's the case?
  • What's one challenge you and your spouse overcame together? What are some ways that experience brought you closer together?
  • What's one way you can serve your spouse today?
