Trust No One?

We’ve heard it before: “My word is my bond,” “I swear on my life,” “Cross my heart and hope to die!” But let’s face it, we’ve been hurt. We were disappointed. We’re still alone. He lied! She cheated! They left! What’s new? Who can we trust? Can we even count on God?

The story of Ruth took place in a time characterized by darkness and despair (Judges 21:25). Like many seasons in our lives, Naomi and Ruth suffered confusing and seemingly hopeless circumstances (Ruth 1:3-5). In these days, becoming a widow meant losing everything. Widows were at great social risk, were easy prey for swindlers and would be reduced to begging for food unless someone came to their aid.

In His perfect timing, God sent Boaz into this depressing scene. Boaz courted Ruth like a man courts his potential bride, then promised Ruth his hand in marriage. In Ruth 4:9-12, Boaz followed through on his promise and became Ruth’s rescuer. He restored her life.

Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?” God always keeps His promises, even when people don’t. Like God sent Boaz to Ruth, He sent His promised son to us. Jesus is here to rescue us from confusion and hopelessness.
