To celebrate my 16th birthday, my parents and friends threw me a surprise party. Instead of being surprised I showed up fully prepared, because I had found out about it weeks earlier.  The room was full of people ready to catch me off guard, but I already knew the outcome of the night.

As believers we sometimes may think that our sin comes as a surprise to God -as if once we are saved God expects us to behave perfectly.  Psalm 139 makes it clear that no detail of our lives is hidden from God.  Before our lives began, He recorded each of our days.  This includes not only our successes, but also our failures.

Even the Apostle Paul shared in the struggle with sinful nature.  In Romans 7 he says, “For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do- this I keep on doing.”  As long as we live on this earth we will be in a continual war with our flesh.  The hope we can have is in a God who knows us intimately, has recorded our days, and knows that our completeness comes in Christ alone.
