Unless The Lord

Have you ever tried to build something, but because you didn’t have the right materials or equipment, it didn’t turn out quite as well as you had hoped it would? You might have even had to scrap what you built and begin again. Starting with the right tools in the first place could have saved both time and effort.

David writes in Psalm 127:1, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” In other words, unless the Lord is in control, time and effort are being wasted. Unless the Lord is the foundation of your business, your efforts are for nothing. Unless the Lord is in control of your finances, the money you obtain is for no good. Unless the Lord is the center of your family, relationships will fall apart. Paul later confirms this in Colossians 1:17 when he writes, “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” Only Jesus can hold all things together.

We have all had “unless the Lord” moments in our lives. Some of us might even be going through one of those moments right now. We have to remember to quit striving, building and doing with the wrong materials and the wrong focus. Instead, we must allow Jesus to hold our world together.

Reflect:

  • What are you striving to hold together that only Jesus can hold together? Why are you reluctant to trust Him?
  • How is Jesus calling you to give control to Him in certain areas of your life?
