My grandmama has always dreamed of me playing the piano. She still says, “I believe you’ve got a talent to play that piano. If you would start…”  She goes on to express her dream as I sit and fumble at the keys, inadequately playing the only song I know by heart or picking out the notes to an unfamiliar song. It makes me sad sometimes to know my grandmama is right. I’ve got the long fingers and enough musical ability that I could be playing difficult and beautiful pieces of music. One thing is holding me back. I have not prepared myself for being a successful pianist.

My mother signed me up for lessons when I was little. My parents bought me the piano and the books I needed. They even encouraged me to work at it, but I fell short. My piano books, which held secrets to playing the piano sat unopened on my piano through the week while my lessons approached. My teacher was a master pianist who played for me, showing me what I could become. He gave me sound advice each week on what I could do to improve. I put up the front, but never committed to the process. Now I can look back over the years and think of what I could be able to do now if I had trained.

How many of us struggle in our marriage because we are unprepared for success or uncommitted to the process of improvement? We fail to work hard on our marriage. We own all the books on marriage, but are they read? We read the appropriate Bible verses about marriage, but are they applied?

1 Corinthians 9:25 says, “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”

What are you doing to improve your marriage?
