Use It; Don’t Lose It

Recently, I walked into a local fast food restaurant where I eat frequently. I was greeted by one of the employees there who I see often. He is always kind, efficient and helpful, and I like to eat at this restaurant especially when he is working. We were chatting as he was making my sandwich, and he started asking me some questions about NewSpring. It occurred to me that I see this man almost weekly, and yet this was the first time we had ever talked about anything more significant than what I would like on my sandwich. This got me thinking about how many other faces I see on a regular basis without knowing anything about the people behind the smiles and the “hellos.”

Acts 1:8 says “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Jesus told His followers that they would take His message first to their own city, Jerusalem, and then across the world. Their community came first.

Whether we realize it or not, we all have influence in our communities. We can choose to use that influence to tell others about Jesus or invite them to church, or over time, we will certainly lose it. We live in a hurting world, and if we are followers of Jesus, we carry the solution in our hearts. Jesus’s words are clear; He wants us to tell others about Him. Today, let’s use our influence to make a difference in our communities for Jesus.

Reflect:

  • When was the last time you struck up a conversation with the person behind the counter at your favorite restaurant, grocery store, or coffee shop?
  • Who is coming to your mind right now as someone you need to get to know better and maybe invite to church?
