Use It or Lose It

In Proverbs 6:6-8, Solomon, the author of the book of Proverbs, gives wisdom by examining the life of an ant. He says that an ant knows (without being told by someone over them) that they must store up in the present to be prepared for the future.

When you manage your resources well, you’re practicing something called “stewardship”. Why should we be good stewards of the resources that we have? Jesus answers this with a parable found in Matthew 25:14-30.

In it, a master (God) gives His servants varying amounts of money. After coming back from a trip, He asks what they did with what He gave them. Two of the servants invested what they had and increased it. As a result, the master was pleased with them and rewarded them. The third servant is fearful of risk and buries his gift. When the master hears He did nothing with what was given him, he is stripped of it and cast out.

There are three things we can learn from this parable. One, everything we have comes from God. Literally everything you have (money, family, time, material possessions, etc.) was given to you by God. As creator and provider, all good things come from Him (James 1:17). Second, God expects us to use the things we are given, not hide or waste them. This is true about our money, but also true about our time. And third, we need to use our resources wisely to invest in the Kingdom of God. What we do with what God gives us today will have an eternal impact for Him tomorrow.

Part of stewardship is preparing for the future. And the best way to prepare for the future is to obey God in the present.

  • How does knowing that all that you have comes from God affect how you manage your resources?
  • What’s one thing you can start doing today to improve how you use what God has given you? What’s one thing you can do today that will help you prepare for the future?
  • What’s one way that you can use what God has given you to invest in the Kingdom of God?
