Water Closet Wishes

I once saw a note on a public toilet that stated, “Jiggle handle up and down three times.” Someone had jokingly placed another note beside it that read, “Then clap your hands, spin around, and make a wish, and the toilet will flush.”

Sometimes we treat God this way. We think if we do everything just right—if we say the right words when we pray and forward “Christian” chain letters—we can manipulate God into giving us what we ask for. God is not a genie in a magic lamp. He’s the all-powerful creator of the universe, our loving Father.

In all of his misplaced accusations, Eliphaz the Temanite got one thing right. In Job 15:14 he said, “What are mortals, that they could be pure, or those born of woman, that they could be righteous?” Our right standing with God comes only through recognizing that Jesus’s death on the cross paid for our sins, something we could never deserve. God sent Jesus to reunite us because He loves us and created us with purpose. He tells us so in Jeremiah 29:11: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”

At any given time, we see only a fragment of God’s plan for our lives. It’s our job to trust that God knows and wants what’s best for us, and to move forward one step at a time in faith.
