We Already Have What We Need

Let’s be honest. How often do we catch ourselves thinking or praying something like this:
“If I only had ________, I could do _______.”
“If I had what ________ has, I could do so much more than what I’m doing.”

It’s easy to fall into the comparison trap. We look at what others have and convince ourselves that we need more of something before we can do what God has put on our hearts. The truth is God has already given us everything we need to do what He has called us to do. We just have to recognize what we’ve been given and release it for Him to use.

Mark 6 is a great example of how this works. A large crowd gathers to hear Jesus teach. When it gets late, the disciples tell Jesus to send the crowd away so they can go get dinner. But Jesus tells the disciples, “You give them something to eat” (Mark 6:37, ESV). A young boy stepped up and gave the disciples the little bit of food he had on him. Once the boy released what he had, Jesus used it and 5,000 people were fed.

The disciples were stressing out, but everything they needed to feed the crowd was right in front of them. The same is true for me and you. We don’t need what everyone else has. Everything we need to do what God has called us to is already in our hands.

Reflect:

  • Have you been looking at what others have and wondering why God hasn’t given that to you?
  • What is in your hands that you need to ask God to use?

The hill where Jesus fed the 5,000.
