We Are Family

Have you ever gone through a period in life where you just don’t want to go to church? I have, and as I look back, I realize those seasons of life are where I have felt most lonely, discouraged and unsatisfied. I have a friend who tells me she prefers to not go to church because she feels that God does not judge us based on church attendance or encourage us to commit to a local church. She also believes her relationship with Christ is not found in a local church, but in prayer and Bible reading alone. Unfortunately, I know she is missing something that God really wants for all of us - community.

God really loves to communicate to His people through His people -- the Church. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul writes an analogy to explain the importance of the Church: “The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’ And the head cannot say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you! On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable … God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it … so that its parts should have equal concern for each other.”

I know that when I go to church I will be encouraged, lifted up and I will hear from God. He often uses the chorus of a song the band sings to remind me of His love. Sometimes He leads me to Church just so I can see the smiling greeters to remind me that He is proud of me. No matter how I feel, I know He wants me to meet with my brothers and sisters in Christ so we can lift each other up and hear from God together.

  • Have you ever abandoned the local Church? How did you feel while you were away?
  • Are you currently involved in the Church? (i.e. small group, volunteering, giving.) What next step do you need to take in order to stay involved or become involved with the local Church?
