We Are Not Meant For This World

A couple months ago I experienced one of the worst weeks of my life. They say bad things come in threes, but that week it was more like fives and tens. At the end of it, I thought, “What should I be learning here?”

I did learn from that week. The Lord reminded me that I’m not in control, and I can’t handle everything myself. As I read Romans 8, it struck me that facing tough times is inevitable because we aren’t meant for this world. We are meant for Heaven, and until we get there we will surely experience pain and suffering. Some pain and suffering is caused by circumstances that are out of our control. Sometimes, it’s the result of our own sinfulness. But either way, dealing with difficulty is a part of life.

While that seems frustrating and sad, our attitude toward pain and suffering should not be one of hopelessness. Instead, our longing should be for Heaven and for Jesus, because we have something infinitely better waiting for us in eternity. Until we reach that point, take hope in knowing that nothing we experience on Earth is meaningless. The Lord uses the brokenness in this world to teach us, humble us and remind us that this is not the place we were meant to stay forever.
