What is truth?

In a world that bombards us with information and the next “new thing,” it can be hard to distinguish fact from fiction. We find ourselves searching for something that we can’t identify. We follow fads, take vacations, move to new cities searching for a fresh start. Even the longing in each of our hearts for adventure can be attributed to this: A search for truth.

When we understand that God made us in His image (Genesis 1:27), to live in relationship with Him, it makes sense that only He can provide what our souls long for. God is truth. His word is truth. His laws are truth. He is that standard for truth by which everything else is measured.

It is true that God never changes; therefore His word never changes, and we can trust in His promises.

The Psalmist declares the Lord’s trustworthiness, steadfastness, and righteousness in Psalm 119:137-144. It is true that God never changes; therefore His word never changes, and we can trust in His promises. We can trust that He hears our prayers. We can trust that He calls us by name. We can trust that Jesus will one day return. We can trust that He knows the best plan for our lives. We can trust that He loves us. When the world leaves us lost and searching for truth God is always the answer.

  • When was one time you searched for truth somewhere other than God? What did you find?
  • In what area of your life do you need to apply the truth of God’s Word today?
  • The Psalmist asks God to “give me understanding” (Psalm 119:144). In what area can you ask God to give you a greater understanding of His word and His promises?
