Whatever the Cost

The baby has come. A chance for new beginnings, a new way of life. The angels rejoiced and the Magi traveled from far to worship and bring Him gifts. He came in humility and brought life, love, peace and joy. But some will never see it. Some will even despise it. Jesus had barely left the manger and His life was in danger, forcing His family to leave to protect the Savior.

Mary and Joseph experienced the emotional roller coaster of pure elation followed by fear. Sometimes, we experience the same kind of ride when we come to know Christ. We give Him our hearts, accept the gift of new life, and go away rejoicing. Then, before we see it coming, a friend mocks us or a family member ridicules our decision. Perhaps we begin to feel isolated and alone. Following Jesus can be hard, and sometimes it may seem like the price is too great. Not everyone will rejoice with us. Some will even despise the steps we take, but as the angels said to the shepherds, “Do not be afraid.” God so loved the world that he gave His only Son so we might be saved. He counted the cost, and paid a great price because He loves us so.

Heaven rejoiced at the birth of our Savior, and angels rejoice at the salvation of even one person. Let us be grateful for the gift of salvation and for new life. Let us commit to follow Him, whatever the cost.
