When Did Death Die?

"Victorious," a new song from NewSpring Worship, was inspired by 1 Corinthians 15:55 and Romans 8:39.

In one way or another, we all have dealt with death. Even so, we are people who live “in the moment”. Living is hard enough, right? Who has time to focus on death? Yet, as soon as we take our first breath in this life, our clock starts ticking towards the inevitable end.

If the Bible teaches us anything about our time here on this earth, it is this: our lives are but whispers - like steam rising and disappearing above a cup of coffee (James 4:14 and Psalm 144:4). So, if we can’t stop death’s approach, how do we deal with its sting and ultimate triumph? How do we look at death squarely in the face with solid Hope and confident Victory?

In 2 Timothy 1:10, we see that Jesus took away the grip of death; He caused death to die. To those who believe, death’s dark, murderous threats no longer hold water. And in doing so, Jesus revealed two things: life and immortality. This is huge! He showed that God’s children are indestructible and incorruptible. He proves that death is actually the beginning of forever.

Jesus is our Victory! And if He can do that to death, there is nothing that can separate us from Him. Since He has won, we have won!

Reflect:

  • In what way does eternity frighten you?
  • What main fear do you need to turn into victory?
  • How can your victory give you strength and courage to help others?
