When Life Doesn’t Go As Planned

We all have an idea of where we think our life will go. Some of us dream of getting married, buying a house and having two kids, a boy and girl. Some of us picture ourselves traveling the world. Others have their careers plotted out in a 10-year strategic plan.

Dreaming of the future is a normal part of human life. But the truth is, we have no idea what tomorrow holds. Proverbs 16:9 says, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

God will provide us with thousands of opportunities over the course of our lives. Some opportunities come right when we dreamed they would. Others are not anything like what we expected, leaving us feeling lost and confused.

God’s plans do not always look like our plans, but they are always the right plans. When we look at our lives and think, “This is not where I thought I’d be,” we can take comfort in knowing that God is not surprised at all.

God loves us and designs every step in our lives with a purpose. Maybe your 10-year plan was not God’s 10-year plan. Or, maybe you stopped following God’s directions for a season. Our greatest successes and our greatest failures all play a part in the story God is weaving together in our lives.

The beautiful thing about the Lord establishing our steps is this: We’re never so far from God that He can’t redeem our mistakes, and we’re never so in step with God that we cease needing His direction.

If we’ll put Jesus first and take the next step He sets before us, we can rest assured that no matter how different our lives are from what we planned, we are just where we need to be.

  • Are you where you imagined you’d be at this age? If there’s one thing you could change what would it be?
  • What’s one way that following Jesus has made your life different, but better, than you thought it would be?
  • What’s one next step you need to take in your walk with Jesus this week?
