When Times Get Tough

Job 16:1 -19:29

A friend’s mother was recently admitted to the hospital after a sudden and unexpected heart attack. Every time my friend spoke about what was going on or updated Facebook, she never failed to mention that God was good in all situations. She praised God’s name when she reported good news as well as bad news.

Terrible as it was, what my friend went through doesn’t seem quite so awful when compared to Job. He had lost everything: his family, wealth and health. Job acknowledges in 19:21 that God is the one who has taken all of these things away from him. And yet, just a few verses later, Job praises God. God is his Redeemer, and Job yearns for the day that he will stand in His presence.

I know people were impacted by the way my friend handled a very difficult situation, and I can’t imagine the lives that were touched by Job’s reaction to his circumstances. How do you react when life gets tough? Are you praising God through the good and the bad? Will other people’s lives be impacted by your reaction to your circumstances?
