When You Feel You Have Nothing

There was a news story recently of a man who stood at an intersection holding a sign that said: “I have a home ... and a car ... and a job. Do you need a few bucks for some coffee?” Giving away $5 at a time, reporters asked why he was being so generous. His reply? “God has been so undeservingly gracious in giving me more than I need. Why wouldn't I do the same for others?”

In the book of Ruth, God is graciously generous through the thoughtful acts of others. From the day Ruth met Boaz, he was kind and gentle with her, giving her more than she could ever ask for. “He gave me these six measures of barley, saying, ‘Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed’ ” (Ruth 3:17).

Boaz gave Ruth what she needed and more; Jesus does the same for us. When we are far away from Him, scared, alone and wondering how we will make it through or when we get too busy to notice how He is present in our lives, He draws us in and gives us more than we deserve — in relationship and sustenance.

If we let ourselves slow down to think about our blessings, we’ll begin to see Jesus never leaves us empty handed, and we can start trusting Him in His promise to provide.

  • What abundant areas of your life can you share with others?
  • How are you showing God you trust Him to never leave you empty handed?
  • How might God be trying to bless you that you have yet to notice or receive because you’ve been “too busy” or are not in tune with Him?
