Who’s Got Your Back?

We receive a lot of love. We get it through birthday greetings on Facebook. We are given love through the outpouring of support we get when tragedy strikes. We see love in the appreciation coworkers show at a going away party. Moments like these make the love people feel for us tangible. It is through that love that God shows His love for us.

Proverbs 17:17 is both encouraging and convicting. It is encouraging to hear that we have friends in fellow believers who love us when times are good or bad. This scripture also informs us of the behavior we should have toward our friends. Yes, our friends do love us at all times, but we should be loving our friends at all times: “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity” (Proverbs 17:17).

During adversity, we frequently isolate ourselves from others. It’s too easy to pull away. As followers of Christ, we should instead seek Godly advice, fellowship and support. We are called to be there for others and others are called to be there for us. Jesus commands His disciples in John 13:34-35, “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Jesus commands us to love our friends at all times. It is the defining characteristic of a disciple of Christ.
