Whose Money Is It?

The first thing that we can lose focus on regarding money is whose money it really is. In truth, all the money and possessions that we “own” were given by God. Far too often we believe the lie that we earned this money and therefore it is ours to decide how to spend it.

In Matthew 25:14-30, the master entrusts his servants with different amounts of his money and expects them to use it wisely. When the master returns, he praises the first two servants as “good and faithful” because of their actions with the money. However, he calls the third “wicked and lazy” because he did nothing. The first two servants displayed their love and respect for their master by remaining faithful to him; the third did not.

The money that we have is a blessing from God, no matter how little or much that may be. Given His love and faithfulness, our desire should be to honor Him with our money and use it in a way that reflects our love for and faith in our Father. This includes tithing our regular ten percent, but it also means being faithful with the remaining ninety. It is God’s money, after all–we are simply stewards of it.
