Why Here?

Sitting on the porch of a mountain cabin, my husband sighed and asked, “Why couldn’t my family have come over here in the 1900s and bought up a whole mountain or something?” We were renting a guesthouse near Bryson City, and judging from family photos and décor, the owner’s family had a long history in the Smoky Mountains.

I understood my husband’s sentiment completely. Having grown up in south Louisiana, I saw thousands of stunning sunsets over the marsh. The sky glowed in shades of pink and orange, and light reflected off the water like it was glitter. In my memory, it’s breathtaking. At the time, it was normal.

We always seem to wish for a life other than one we were given. The truth is God purposely placed each of us exactly where we are. In Ezekiel 4:5 God says, “This is Jerusalem, which I have set in the center of the nations, with countries all around her.” God could have led his people anywhere, but he chose to put them in the center of the known world where His actions would be on display for everyone to see.

The same foresight and planning went into making each one of us. Where we live and whom we were born to is not coincidental. God has never done anything without purpose. In wisdom, He has made us all.
