Why you shouldn’t give up

Exodus 17

Do you ever get so tired of this journey you that feel like you can no longer go on? Maybe, you have a high-pressure project at work or school with stacking up deadlines. Maybe, you have a child who wakes up several times a night. Or, maybe you’re dealing with an illness or grief that is sapping all your energy.

We all need people in our corner refusing to let us give up.

We all need people in our corner refusing to let us give up. That is exactly what Aaron and Hur were to Moses — two people who would not let him give up.

“When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it.  Aaron and Hur held his hands up — one on one side, one on the other — so his hands remained steady till sunset” (Exodus 17:12).

Do you feel like giving up? The next generation tells us that we cannot. They may not directly come up to us and say, “Don’t give up!” But, when we give up it doesn’t just affect us. It also affects those who are following us.

We never know who is watching us. Our actions are always being followed. We could be the one person someone’s child listens to when they do not hear anyone else. Our determination teaches the next generation what’s worth fighting for, just like Moses, Aaron, and Hur’s determination showed Israel the Promised Land was worth fighting for.

Moses would never see the Promised Land, but he worked to leave those who would follow him in a better position than where he started. Our ceiling is the next generation’s floor. They will do far more for God than we can even imagine. It’s our responsibility to leave them a solid foundation to build on.  We owe it to them to teach them how to continue the fight that was started so many years ago.

  • What is one thing you wish you could pass along to the next generation?
  • Who is one person who has helped you when you felt like you could not go on?
  • What example are you setting for the next generation regarding what’s worth fighting for?
