Wordless Worship

In Luke 7:36-50, we meet a nameless party crasher who shows up to Simon’s dinner party to find Jesus. She’d heard he was a friend to sinners and she was well-qualified for that title. When the woman entered Simon’s home, her only desire was to find Jesus.

As an uninvited guest, you can imagine all eyes were fixed on her as she entered the house. Her intrusion would be the story people told their friends when asked how the dinner went. Still, it didn’t stop her. This woman didn’t care what Simon’s guests knew of her and her sinful reputation. Her desire to see Jesus was greater than her fear of what people thought.

Imagine the party’s attention shifting from the woman to Jesus as everyone guessed what His reaction would be. The woman saw Jesus and held nothing back. Overcome with awe, she offered Him her wealth with the perfume in the alabaster jar. She poured out her tears of repentance on His feet. She honored Jesus by using her hair to wipe His feet. She gave Him her heart.

Like the woman in the story, when we recognize the magnitude of what Jesus has done for us, our natural reaction is an outpouring of love and affection. Take some time to examine your life today. Does your behavior and attitude toward Jesus reflect a heart that has experienced true forgiveness? Which character does your life most resemble - the woman overflowing with whole-hearted devotion? Or the dinner guests casting judgement at this unrefined display of affection?
