Worship is More

Growing up, my family went to church every Sunday morning. We went to Sunday School first then the service. I remember liking Sunday school but being bored to tears in the service. I sat there quietly thinking about what I was going to do afterward, or doodling, or looking at all the finely dressed people fighting to stay awake. More than once I dosed off during an unbelievably long pastoral prayer.

Worship was definitely NOT what I was doing.

Psalms are all about worship. We honor God by worshiping Him. We give glory to God by worshiping Him. At the beginning of Psalm 29, David says “Honor the Lord, you heavenly beings; honor the Lord for his glory and strength. Honor the Lord for the glory of his name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness” (Psalm 29:1-2).

Worshiping God is not showing up to church on Sunday morning, sitting through an hour or so of complete torture and throwing $20 in the offering plate. God wants our whole heart, not just an hour of our week. He wants a relationship with us that includes daily conversations, interaction with His Word and joyful obedience to His commands. Only then can we begin to live the abundant life Jesus tells us about.
