Exodus 12, Exodus 13, and Exodus 14

Through the Passover, God preserved His people from the tenth plague that He was inflicting on the Egyptians, the death of the firstborn. This feast would serve as a reminder of the Lord’s deliverance for generations. It was celebrated by Jesus and His disciples the night before his death and is still remembered by Jews to this day.

The Lord parted the Red Sea for the people of Israel to walk through on dry ground, destroying the Egyptian army in the process. At the end of 430 years of sojourning in Egypt, the people of Israel saw the great power of the Lord and believed in Him and his servant Moses.

Matthew 19:1-15

As Jesus concludes His ministry in Galilee, He and His disciples begin their consequential journey to Jerusalem.

The Pharisees tested Jesus with the sensitive issue of divorce. They attempt to twist the words of Moses in Deuteronomy 24:1-4, claiming that Moses commanded divorce. But Jesus corrects them, showing that God’s design from the beginning in Genesis 2:24 was for a lifelong bond between a man and a woman.

God instructed Moses to allow divorce in certain extreme circumstances but never to require it. Jesus teaches His disciples that they must receive difficult teachings like these with the trust of little children.

“But Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 19:14
