Exodus 15 and Exodus 16

After being delivered from slavery, Israel bursts into song. The songs of Moses and Miriam recount God guiding and fighting for Israel as they fled Egypt.

While Israel still had a long journey ahead, they took this moment to pause and to praise. The shift in Exodus 15 from prose to lyrics does the same for the reader. It pauses the narrative causing future generations to reflect on what an amazing thing God had done.

Worship was Israel’s response to God after their escape, and in Exodus 16, God makes worship part of their new rhythm.

Manna would arrive daily, but on the seventh day of every week, they were to rest. Much of Israel had spent their lives enslaved or on the run. All they had known was work.

But those old rhythms and ways were not coming with them into the Promised Land. Through the Sabbath, God instills a new rhythm, one built on rest and time with Him.

Matthew 19:16-30

A rich young man comes to Jesus looking for certainty about his salvation. But when Jesus tells him to sell everything, he leaves sad.

The young man’s wealth wasn’t his problem; its place in his heart was. By asking him to sell all he had, Jesus exposed the one thing this man cared about more than God — his money.

This young man was doing all the right things, and he’d come to Jesus expecting another rule to follow or box to check to ensure his righteousness.

Instead, Jesus tells the young man to give it all so he could gain it all (Matthew 19:21). It’s the same promise He gave His followers in Matthew 10:39, “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

Make It Personal
  • How often do you push pause and spend time with the Lord?
  • Think about the last time you did. How did you feel before and after? What would it look like to make rest part of your regular weekly rhythm (if it’s not already)?
  • Do you see yourself in the rich young man from Matthew 19? If so, how?
