Purpose in Persecution

Overview: Psalms 52-54, Acts 23:1-11

Psalm 52 expresses confidence in God’s care and protection. Psalm 53 mourns that mankind does not seek after God. Psalm 54 is a lament asking for God’s help against those that threaten the lives of His people.

After Paul’s arrest in Jerusalem, he appears before the Sanhedrin to defend his innocence according to the Mosaic law. He appeals to the hope of the resurrection of the dead, dividing the different Jewish groups at the time. He is strengthened by the Lord, who reassures him that his persecution is for a greater purpose.
