You Are What You Eat

Eating and drinking are essential to life. Without food and water, our bodies cannot function. These essentials give us energy, strength and stamina to meet each day’s challenges.

Sustenance is as important for our spiritual lives. Part of being a Christ follower is sustaining yourself through Jesus’s word. John 6: 56-57 says, “Whoever eats My flesh and drinks my blood remains in Me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me.”

Once we know Jesus and have been transformed by His grace, His teachings must continually feed us. Like the long-distance runner who needs calories to burn while racing, Christians need Jesus to continue running forward.

You can be fed from many different sources: preaching, worship, prayer, small groups, discipleship and daily Bible reading. And, just like food, you should seek to have a balanced approach to feeding yourself spiritually. Just one source is not enough. Also, as with physical eating, be sure to exercise. Do not just take in wisdom, but look for opportunities to put it into practice and share what you’re learning with others.

Take some time today to assess your spiritual diet. Are you feasting on Jesus or running on empty? Are you gorging on good teaching or working out what you’ve learned?
