You Can Be Debt Free

Owing someone money can be stifling. Even paying $20 a month, that’s $20 that could be used to meet a need now. Instead, we find ourselves paying down a debt for something that, in many cases, is long gone. The more money we owe, the more of a burden it can be.

That constant feeling of having to pay something adds pressure to life. It looms over us like a dark cloud. It adds stress and holds us back from doing what we would really like to do with what we earn. And the amount we owe can make us seem we are only working to pay off debt. In Proverbs 22:7, the Bible likens this to slavery.

God doesn’t want us to live for money. In Matthew 6:24 we read that Jesus said we “cannot serve both God and money.” Living life for money distracts us from living the life God calls us to live and from having the kind of relationship God wants to have with us. Let God have control of your money so you can focus on the relationship God wants with you.

  • Do you struggle to budget your money wisely? If so, seek help!
  • Do you tithe? If not, what is one thing that is holding you back from tithing?
  • If you already use a budget and tithe, take a moment to reflect on the ways the Lord has provided for you financially since you gave your finances over to His control.
