You get what you can’t pay for

We’ve all heard, “you get what you pay for,” meaning we tried to get something better for the price of something not so good — and it went badly. Almost from birth, we learn that we get things when we trade or do something. Earning is part of our lifelong experience in this world.  We expect to pay for good things.

Believing we are getting closer to God by being better every day is nothing less than worshiping our own efforts instead of worshipping Jesus for who He wants to be; Lord of our life.

When it comes to a relationship with Jesus, we often try to apply this idea of earning. Some of us try to go as far as “I deserve” because we are a good person, do right, attend church, and so on. We might think the good we are doing, or the bad we are avoiding, sets us up to “claim” a relationship with Jesus. Believing we are getting closer to God by being better every day is nothing less than worshiping our own efforts instead of worshipping Jesus for who He wants to be; Lord of our life.

Or we might even try to put off accepting God’s free gift of grace in the form of Jesus as an attempt to have some more “freedom” until we finally give in. This is completely backward and not understanding where the freedom is. Outside of Jesus, there is no freedom. With Jesus, freedom is absolute. Jesus takes away everything in life which binds us; our past, our sin, our worry, our fear of death, our sense of a purposeless life (Romans 6:3-4). Jesus frees us from sin and death, so we can live our best life through the Holy Spirit (Romans 6:5-10).

Reflect:

  • How much do you believe your relationship with God is based on the good you do or the bad you don’t do? Why?
  • What is one thing you need to ask Jesus to free you from?
  • If you have never started a relationship with Jesus, what is stopping you from accepting God’s free gift of salvation through faith in His Son, Jesus?

If you would like to talk to someone about your relationship with Jesus, stop by the Care Room at your campus, or connect with someone here.
