You Want Me To Do What?

Luke, Matthew and Mark all describe the preparations made for the Passover feast before Jesus’s betrayal. The disciples are trying to figure out where they’re going to eat, and Jesus sends Peter and John into town. He tells them to find a man carrying a jar of water, follow him into a house and tell the owner “The Teacher” wants to know where they can have the Passover together (Luke 22:11). Do you think the disciples might have exchanged little side glances? Do you think they may have felt uncomfortable following a stranger into a house and asking the owner to use a room to eat with Jesus, whom some were seeking to kill?

Jesus had everything arranged. When the disciples obeyed His instructions, the evening preparations fell together perfectly. In Luke 11:28, Jesus says, “Blessed … are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” Obedience brought the disciples into the presence of God.

God still asks us to follow strange paths. Sometimes, He asks us to leave a job, take a pay cut and begin a new venture. Maybe He’s asking you to sign up for a mission trip, even though you don’t have the money set aside and the plane ride and time away from family terrifies you. What if God asks you to talk to the stranger shopping in the next aisle over? God’s path often makes us uncomfortable, but Jesus has made the arrangements. We only need to obey.

  • Is God asking you to do something that doesn’t make sense to you?
  • Have you followed His prompting in the past? What were the results?
