From Burned Out To Sold Out

Jonathan Ashe's Story

At a special live-recorded event in August 2014, Jonathan Ashe had the opportunity to say “thank you” to NewSpring owners for giving to the church that changed his family's life forever. Watch his remarkable video from that day, and read the story behind his story ...

Jonathan Ashe and his wife, Brooke, had made a pact.

This time, they told themselves, they’d sit on the sidelines. They deserved the break, after all. They would say ‘no' to membership, ‘no' to serving, and ‘no' to small group. They would show up each week, do church for an hour or so, and head for the door.

Their deal lasted only six months.

Now I am seeing God do things in our lives I never thought would happen ... We finally realized that volunteering was about becoming more like Jesus.

At the couple’s previous church, Jonathan was a deacon, Sunday School teacher, youth group leader, and head of several ministries. Brooke was pre-school director. They had felt guilted into serving, and eventually, they both had gotten burned out from laboring out of a sense of duty and routine.

"No one else is going to do it," they had thought to themselves, "so I guess we'll have to."

Volunteering For A Blessing

On their first Sunday at NewSpring in 2010, it was raining. And even though the couple didn't park in a visitor spot, a volunteer came to their car smiling to offer with an umbrella in hand.

"We were blown away,” he says. "The smiles were still there the next week and even the week after. It was beautiful to see people who truly wanted to serve me."

The more time they spent at NewSpring, the more they felt like they wanted to be a part of the vision and the future of the church. That's when they decided to swallow their words, and start volunteering in KidSpring.

A New NewSpring Family

In the first 6 months, the couple’s understanding of serving was turned upside down: Now they were volunteering out of a love and passion for seeing others’ lives changed just as theirs had been.

The couple became friends with the entire KidSpring volunteer crew, and they began to get together and talk during the week about what they were learning, and the things they were going through. NewSpring began to feel smaller and smaller; more like a family.

"We began growing on a level we had never seen before, but it wasn't until we got plugged in,” Jonathan says.

Jonathan says he began to understand what meaningful prayer looked like as he heard fellow volunteers and leaders ask God for bigger and bigger things, totally expecting that He can and will answer.

Jesus used my leaders and other volunteers to completely change our walk with him

Jonathan also began reading the Bible expecting Jesus to speak to him. Before he started serving at NewSpring, it was merely another item on Jonathan's "good Christian" checklist.

“Now I am seeing God do things in our lives I never thought would happen,” he says. "We finally realized that volunteering was about becoming more like Jesus."

Leading and Loving It

When a staff member approached them about stepping into leadership roles, Jonathan and Brooke didn't even have to pray about it. They knew that was their next step.

Jonathan became the leader of the KidSpring Guest Services team, and Brooke became a KidSpring service leader — both serving at all three services.

And in the fall of 2014, after experiencing the power of a small group, they decided to lead a small group themselves — something they never dreamed they would do.

"Jesus used my leaders and other volunteers to completely change our walk with him,” Jonathan says.
