Session 12

Turning Complaints to Praise

Read: 2 Corinthians 7:1-7

It is said that bad things come in threes. Some of us may feel that we’ve met our quota for life’s bad circumstances. Unfortunately, the longer we dwell on the situations, the harder they seem to be to deal with.

The struggles we face aren’t unique to us or our time. In 2 Corinthians 7:5 Paul describes a time he went through a similar season of life. He tells of a lack of rest, harassment at every turn, conflicts on the outside, and fears on the inside. Lack of rest, conflict, fear...those are all familiar sounding situations.

The good news is Paul doesn’t stop with a sad list of all the hard circumstances he faced. He doesn’t dwell on the problems or place blame for them. Instead, he turns to Jesus and praises God as a comforter in troubled times. He even says that God’s comfort made his “joy greater than ever” (2 Corinthians 1:7). Paul is able to have joy even in the worst situations because he knows that God’s sovereignty is greater than anything we may face.
