Four clues to who Jesus wants to be to you

Written during a dark and uncertain time in Israel’s history, the book of Isaiah holds many prophecies concerning the Israelites and their future.

While God’s chosen people would encounter trials and hardships, Isaiah never failed to point out the beauty of God’s redemptive plan: the coming Messiah. The Israelites would have been encouraged and strengthened by Isaiah’s message of ultimate hope:

“For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

Though their circumstances may have been grim, Israel could look to a coming Messiah who would redeem everything. Jesus is the Messiah, and in this passage, Isaiah uses four titles to describe Jesus’ role and character.

As a Wonderful Counselor, Jesus is able to make decisions with divine wisdom we humans will never understand. His insight isn’t hidden from us. As a Wonderful Counselor, Jesus leads us to make wise decisions as well.

As Mighty God, Jesus takes on the title of Yahweh — the LORD — Himself. Jesus is one with God. He was with God at the creation of the Earth and nothing is beyond His ability to affect.

As an Everlasting Father, Jesus represents an ever-present protector and benevolent provider. This role is indicative of Jesus’ role as the ultimate king. It also serves as a reminder of how God cares for His people.

Lastly, as the Prince of Peace, Jesus is the ruler whose reign will bring about peace and tranquility that will never cease.

For the Israelites, these names would have brought joy and comfort in the midst of dangerous and unsettling circumstances. The same is true for us today. No matter what we’re going through, when we are in Christ, we can look to Jesus as our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

Reflect:

  • Of the four names Isaiah uses to describe Jesus, which one means the most to you? Why?
  • If you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you can change that today!  Allow Him to be your Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Learn more about salvation or email us at hello@newspring.cc
