Session 15

God can do great things through imperfect people

Read: Matthew 1:1-17

When you think of the kind of people God works through, who comes to mind?

Maybe you imagine folks dressed in their Sunday best clutching their Bibles with big, plastic smiles. Or perhaps, you picture those perfect people who always say and do the right things. In other words, people nothing like you.

Matthew 1 is a long list of people who made up Jesus’ family tree. The list is perfect in that it matches the plan for the Messiah foretold by the prophets of the Old Testament. But the people named in this list were far from perfect.

  • Abraham followed God to an unknown land, but lost faith in God’s plan for his family and had a son with his maid (Genesis 16:1-4).
  • Tamar disguised herself as a prostitute (Genesis 38).
  • David, known as a man after God’s heart, committed adultery with another man’s wife then murdered him to cover it up (2 Samuel 11).
  • Rahab was a prostitute (Joshua 2).
  • Manasseh and Abijah were just plain evil (2 Kings 21:1-3 and 1 Kings 15:3).

Despite their flaws, God made each of these men and women part of Jesus’ genealogy.

The fact that God accomplished His purpose with sinful people does not excuse their sins. They made big, fat messes for themselves and others. People were hurt and killed as a result of their decisions. Their sin, like ours, brought suffering to this world.

Sin has been a part the DNA of humans since Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3). Sin was a defect passed down from one generation to the next with no cure. Until Jesus.

Jesus lived a perfect life and was God’s sacrifice for the sins of the world. And just like men and women on this list, Jesus commissions us to be part of His story. As we share the good news about Jesus’ kingdom, God continues to work through imperfect men and women to change the world.

Reflect:

  • How does it empower you to know you don’t need to be perfect for God to work through you?
  • Have you allowed Jesus to forgive your sins? If not, you can do that today
