Session 19

Character Flaws

Read: Colossians 3:12-14

Paul commands the Colossians to be kind, humble, gentle, patient, forgiving and loving. On our own, we can’t achieve anything on that list consistently. Paul is giving a description of what a person’s character is like when God gets a hold on his life. Paul shows the church a consistent character of Christ, which is what Paul wanted for himself and for everyone else.

We can know that the character of Christ is consistent because Paul and Peter, two very different apostles, agree on the character of a Christian. Peter describes this character in 2 Peter 1:5-8: “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

When we focus on the addition of these things to our faith, the things we need to remove from our character become more evident. We all have character flaws; we are short tempered, judgmental and selfish. But as we “make every effort” toward goodness, the flaws will start to fade away.

Reflect:

  • What do you need to add to your every-day decisions to be more like Jesus? Ask the Lord to give these characteristics to you, and He will. (Matthew 7:7-8)
  • What do you need to cut from your character in order to be more like Jesus?
