Session 16

What Are You Craving?

Read: Colossians 3:5-6

Have you ever gotten a food craving so bad your mouth started watering just thinking about it? Why do you think your body craves that certain food? When you dwell on a thought, you begin to give life to it. Eventually, those thoughts turn into actions.

These cravings we have don’t just pertain to food. Paul tells us in Colossians 3:5-6 to put to death the cravings of our earthly nature, which he lists as sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed. Paul is reminding us to not give life to sinful thoughts. Whatever we focus on we give life to, but whatever we ignore we kill. Whatever we feed in our lives we continue to allow to grow, but whatever we starve dies.

The language Paul uses is harsh but necessary. We need to put to death our sinful cravings. We can do that by examining ourselves to see what things in our lives feed our earthly nature and what things starve it. Maybe we feed our sinful cravings with something we allow ourselves to look at on the computer or television. Maybe it’s something we allow ourselves to hear, like the music we listen to or the conversations we join. Maybe it’s the people we surround ourselves with, such as our friends or coworkers. Identifying sinful desires and being intentional about putting them out of our minds can help prevent sinful actions from becoming reality.

Reflect:

  • What is one sinful craving you need to starve?
  • What things are you allowing to feed your earthly nature? Here's where you can find some steps to help you put those things to death.
