No More Dirty Laundry

From Hebrews: A 24-Day Devotional

Read

Hebrews 7

Why is dirty laundry so complicated? Wash bright colors in cold water with color protector. Wash whites in hot water, and don’t forget the bleach. Pretreat grease stains immediately with degreaser before washing. We need one miracle stain remover that works on all stains, for all fabrics, in all temperatures!

Such a miracle cleaner does not exist for doing laundry, but there is a supernatural, one-time stain remover for the mess our sin creates. Hebrews 7:27 says Jesus sacrificed for our sins once for all when He offered Himself up on the cross. Regardless of our age, race or gender, and no matter how deep our sin goes, Jesus’ death was enough.

Unlike the high priests that served in Jewish temples, Jesus made one sacrifice that was powerful enough to wash away all of our sin forever! In doing so, Jesus established a new covenant. When we ask Jesus into our lives and commit to following Him step by step, our sin no longer separates us from God. Jesus “is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them” (Hebrews 7:25).

Any sin-fighting regimen outside of Jesus ultimately fails. For the dirty laundry of our hearts, no system of do’s and don’ts will clean us permanently.  Only Jesus’ sacrifice, His blood shed on the cross, cleans us forever.

Reflect:

  • Do you feel dirty because of sin in your life?  Is your next step to embrace Jesus, to receive His cleansing and be made clean forever?
  • Are you trying to clean your own sin through a system of rules and regulations? Is your next step to throw away a faulty system of rules and accept the freedom in Jesus’ cleaning?
