Session 9

The Only Sure Thing

From Hebrews: A 24-Day Devotional

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “The only sure things in life are death and taxes.” What about this one? “You should invest in this or that, it’s a sure thing.”

Whether we are making a joke or considering an important decision, we like the idea of investing in something that we know will yield a return. Maybe “like” isn’t even a strong enough word. We are all living uncertain lives in an uncertain world looking for certainty. It’s part of being human.

The good news is we can swap our uncertainty for certainty, now and in the future. We don’t have to buy anything, invest in anything or follow some program. We simply need to follow Someone. Hebrews 11:17-40 gives examples of people who replaced their human uncertainty with a certainty based on faith in God. They were able to live with confidence knowing that the God they worshipped and served does what He says He will do.

Everyone on this list lived in full faith long before Jesus was born, long before He fulfilled God’s plan and promise by delivering us from sin. Faith is easier for us. We have thousands of years of history and the entirety of Jesus’ ministry to look to for evidence of God fulfilling His promises. When we ask God for “proof” of His promises, He refers us back to Jesus.

Reflect:

  • How have you seen God be faithful in your past? What’s one way He has come through for you or answered a prayer?
  • What, if anything, hinders you from having certainty in God’s ability to do what He says He will do?
  • Has there ever been a time when you asked Jesus into your life? If you want to trade in uncertainty about your relationship with God for certainty, your next step might be salvation.
