Session 15

Read: Matthew 11:28-29

My children love checking the mailbox. They often ask, “Is there anything for me?” Inside, I'm asking the same question. I know there will be bills and junk mail, but I always hope for something personal.

Occasionally I'll receive a thank you note, a birthday card or an invitation. Whether I'm invited to a wedding, birthday party, shower or rehearsal dinner, I've noticed something interesting about invitations. The person sending the invitation makes all the preparations for the event. I only have to respond.

In Matthew 11 Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

This is the best invitation ever given. Jesus is inviting each of us to come to Him and rest. Aren't we all burdened? We're burdened by sin, problems at work, stresses at home and the bad news we hear every day. It's like daily junk mail.

Like the invitations I receive in the mail, Jesus's invitation requires no effort on our part. He doesn't list any preparations we have to make before coming to Him. We don't have to look or act a certain way, have a certain job or know the right people. We don't have to change ourselves. Jesus took our punishment for our sin when He died on the cross. He did the work and made the preparations. We only have to respond. We can accept the punishment ourselves or respond to His invitation and accept His forgiveness.

“Is there anything for me?” one might ask. Yes, there is. It is an invitation to receive forgiveness and live daily in His rest.
