Session 8

Why it’s wise to heed the warnings

From Jeremiah: A 33-Day Devotional

Read

Jeremiah 8

The signs are all there:

Do not enter.

Turn around.

One-way street.

The problem is, the path is so alluring and attractive we look for ways to justify traveling that direction. We know the flashing neon lights are trying to deter us, and we press forward anyway.

Does this scenario sound familiar? Perhaps it's an inappropriate relationship. A poor judgment call on a parental decision. Or maybe a shortcut on a work project.

Just this once, we think. I'll ask forgiveness later and it will never happen again.

The problem isn't the temptation itself. The problem is best described in Jeremiah 8:5-6, when the Lord says, "Then why do these people keep going along their self-destructive path, refusing to turn back, even though I have warned them? Is anyone sorry for their sin? No! All are running down the path of sin as swiftly as a horse rushing into battle."

It's OK to fall down. It's not OK to stay there and continue to make sinful mistakes by choice. God gives us healing because He is a merciful Father. However, He also gives us free will to make mistakes and learn from them. A heart seeking healing will reap the benefits of God's grace. Remember it is OK to make mistakes. It's a different story when we fool ourselves into thinking consequences do not apply to us.

Reflect:

  • Are there any decisions you have made knowing full well the consequences waiting on the other side?  What would you do differently knowing what you know now?
  • Is God putting up caution signs in any area of your life today? Is there a decision or activity where you’re consciously ignoring warnings?
