Internship
NewSpring Internship Expectations
Vision
Why do internships exist at NewSpring?
NewSpring internships exist to build the person building the Kingdom. (BTP BTK)
We will fight to ensure that the proposition of building isn’t solely for either the intern or the church, but that BOTH would be built up (1 Cor. 3:9-10; Eph. 4:11-12 Eph. 2:19-22 MSG).
We believe the best way to accomplish the vision is to focus heavily on BOTH your input (what we pour in) and output (what you pour out). If we overemphasize input, we will bloat you with knowledge and potentially lead you to become a stagnant pool. If we overemphasize output, we will empty your cup and lead you into potential dangers spiritually, emotionally, or physically.
- INPUT - We want to intentionally, lovingly challenge you to grow by what we pour in. This is what we as a church do to build the person. But you have responsibility here as well.
- Intentional shepherding
Challenged by the call in 1 Peter 5, your mentor will be working to lead you to greener pastures through what they teach and how they live (also Proverbs 27:23).
Your role:
- Submit to authority. God works in it. His blessing flows from it. (Hebrews 13:17)
- Participate in weekly one-on-one meetings with your mentor.
- Be open and transparent about your story. Vulnerability/confession leads to healing (James 5:16).
- Clear expectations
We believe that to be unclear in our expectations is to be unkind. We want you to
clearly understand at all times both what the win is and how to win.
The win - an intentional season of growth in your character, calling, and competency, and a positive impact on the Kingdom. If you and the Kingdom have grown over the course of time in your internship...you’ve won. The win is not a job at NewSpring Church.
- Centrally, we will provide a clear on-ramp through an in-person orientation, and a clear off-ramp to debrief your experience.
- Your mentor will provide a clearly defined, written set of expectations and responsibilities. This will help you understand what the win is for your specific serving role.
- Your mentor should be leading you following delegation best practices (I do you watch, we do, you do I watch, you do). This helps you know how to win. There may be times when “figure it out” is the delegation model, but this should be the exception, not the rule.
- Participate in a written evaluation with your mentor after 30 days. This is either the point of affirmation, transition to another team, or the early off ramp for you.
- Participate in a written evaluation with your mentor as you exit the program. One of the clearest points of the evaluation should be your defined next step as you exit the internship program. What is your aim? Your direction? What are we celebrating that we are sending you out to do?
- OUTPUT - We want to intentionally, lovingly challenge you to grow by what you pour out. This is what you do to build the Kingdom.
- Valuable experience
We believe that you will have the greatest opportunity to grow and ultimately
benefit the Kingdom when given meaningful responsibilities in shepherding
people and stewarding resources. Interns will jump at the opportunity to serve in
any “small” thing necessary, but will be given the chance to own actual ministry
weight.
- As much as possible, you will be given the same treatment, access, and opportunities as staff. That also means you’ll have the same accountability.
- You will work an average of 25 hours per week in a schedule agreed upon with your mentor. There is no minimum or maximum number of hours per week (as your stipend is not dependent upon nor payment for hours served). The intent is to give you flexibility to pursue growth and excellence, just not at the expense of your health or rest.
- You will be expected to attend, and where applicable serve at NewSpring events or conferences during the tenure of your internship (All Staff/Academy days, Fuse summer camp, etc.). These are invaluable deposits and opportunities in upholding the vision of building the person building the kingdom.
- Stretching assignments
You will be required to put meaningful thought into and take a hungry responsibility for your personal development by completing stretching assignments to lead to a greater personal capacity in your character, calling, and competency. (Acts 2:42)
- You will complete all assignments given by the Support Internship staff to the best of your abilities, doing the work for the Lord not ministry leaders. (Colossians 3:23)
- You will actively and enthusiastically participate in a weekly video teaching/discussion led by Support Internship staff.
- Your mentor will lead you through a Bible reading plan the two of you agree on. While Centrally we will be providing lots of resources for growth, and undeniably the most treasured resource we could put in front of you is God’s Word, we want to be able to tailor the experience to your individual needs and maturity rather than making it a one-size fits all approach.
- Champion your growth. Pursue spiritual disciplines. All the tools and resources to help you will be there. But you’ve got to do the work.
Values in Short:
- Something to do (valuable experience)
- Someone to show (intentional shepherding)
- Guidelines in view (clear expectations)
- Somewhere to grow (stretching assignments)
