The rest of the story

Genesis 46: 1-27

In Genesis 46, we see the fruit of God’s plan for Joseph and his family. We can recognize how God was working for good through Joseph’s betrayal, imprisonment, and hard work in a way that is difficult in the midst of a tough situation.

I taught school for more than 30 years in the same district, and on a Monday afternoon in October, I was told my position was being cut because of funding. My last day would be that Friday. I was stunned. I had perfect evaluations. I was on the team to evaluate new teachers. I had no conflicts with parents. I was devastated.

Like Joseph, I had been betrayed. No one said sorry or we hate this because you are so valuable. I called my husband and wailed like a child. "I love my job. I need the money. God, what is happening?" I soon found out. My dad had emphysema and was taking care of my mom, who had advanced Alzheimer's. They needed me. I was blessed to have two months with my dad. He died at the end of December.

God's plan exceeds anything we could imagine. Twenty more teachers lost their jobs in January. I would have been in that group, but God used my circumstances to give me that precious time and to help my family. God also used Joseph’s adversity to prepare him to help and be reconciled with his family. Romans 8:28 tells us that God works in all things for the good of those who love Him. Remember, when you are in pain, trust God. He knows the rest of the story.

Reflect:

  • Are there any circumstances in your life that you don’t quite understand? Do those circumstances allow for more time with your family or friends that you know you need to get in touch with? What good can come out of the situation?
  • Are there any circumstances in your life that have you in pain? If so, have you laid those circumstances and that pain at Jesus’ feet? The first step in trusting God with our pain is to lay down our burdens (Matthew 11:28). If you haven’t taken this step, take the time to do it now.
