Amazed and Afraid

“Jesus went before them and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid” (Mark 10:32).

If you’ve been a Christian for any length of time, you can probably relate to the disciples’ mixed emotions. Jesus’s life, love and sacrifice are amazing. But following Him wholeheartedly is scary. We start asking ourselves things like “What if I mess up? What happens when I don’t get it right? What if I get rejected, hurt or made fun of?”

As the disciples were having a similar meltdown on the way to Jerusalem, Jesus didn’t give them hugs or reassure them that everything would be OK. Instead, Jesus gave them a hard dose of reality, telling them He would be betrayed, condemned, mocked, scourged, spit on and killed. That’s not exactly a pep talk. It’s more like throwing gas on a freak-out fire. But then Jesus says something that seemed to quell the flames: “… and the third day he shall rise again” (Mark 10:34). In the course of Jesus’s ministry, the disciples saw Him perform countless miracles. So when Jesus promised to overcome death, it was like asking, “How much do you really believe that I am who I say I am?”

The disciples followed Jesus to Jerusalem on the promise that He would do what He said. And today, we follow Jesus with the full knowledge that it happened. Jesus rose from the grave! This is the reason for our hope. I will never be able to follow Jesus’s example perfectly, but that’s OK because Jesus was perfect for me. His death on the cross paid the debt for my sin, and by rising from the grave, He proved that His power is greater than anything that holds us back here on Earth.

Reflect:

  • Where does our ability to live like Jesus come from? Is following His example something we can do by our own determination?
  • Jesus rose from the grave to set us free. What do you need to ask the Lord to set you free from today?
