Avoid the Monkey Trap

A monkey trap is a cage containing a banana with a hole large enough for a monkey's hand to fit in but not large enough for the monkey's fist (including the banana) to come back out. The monkey's stubbornness in not letting go of the banana keeps them trapped! We see people fall into traps like this all of the time.

Some folks have a tendency to latch onto one or two things that really matter to them and will redefine reality before they let them go. I did this when I was single. I'd latch onto some woman and convince myself that she was “the one” in the face of all evidence and counsel to the contrary. I'd redefine my reality until she fit as the perfect mate.

We can do the same thing in our walk with God. In Acts 28:27, Paul quotes Isaiah 6:9 to the Jewish leaders in Rome after they rejected the good news of the Messiah: “For this people’s heart has become calloused … they have closed their eyes.” These leaders walked away because Jesus didn't fit alongside the things they were holding on to. When we hold on to things in life over God, we will only find ourselves trapped. And all we have to do to escape the trap is let go and give our circumstances to God.

Reflect:

  • Am I trying to fit Jesus into my life or have I given my life to Jesus?
  • What is the one thing I don't want Jesus asking about?
  • Where have I stretched reality to cover something I suspect isn't quite right?
