Be the Example

As followers of Jesus, we are His spokespeople on Earth. What we say, how we live, the way we love -- all of these things leave an impression about who Jesus is and what He’s all about.

When Nehemiah is appointed governor, he shows compassion to the poor by refusing payment. In Nehemiah 5:15, he says, "But the earlier governors — those preceding me — placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. ... But out of reverence for God I did not act like that." Although it was common among governors, Nehemiah rejected the food and silver to show God’s love to the people in Judah.

Our opportunities to demonstrate Jesus’s love might be different from Nehemiah's, but they will likely be just as sacrificial. In 1 Corinthians 8, Paul warns us to be aware of how others might perceive Jesus based on our actions. A behavior that might not cause you to waver in your faith could cause confusion for someone else and lead them astray. "When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ," Paul writes.

People are watching the way we live. If you didn’t know Jesus or were new to the faith, would your actions show the true nature of Christ?
