Cheerful Givers

The suspense and anticipation of Christmas morning is a feeling like no other.  I can remember waking up well before sunrise to get the fun started.  As I stumbled into the living room my heart leapt for joy as I laid sight on what Santa had so generously given.  Ironically, I never noticed my mother smiling from ear to ear on the other side of the room, quietly drinking her coffee.  Now a mother myself, the joy that comes from giving gifts to my girls and seeing the joy on their face far outweighs the joy I experienced on the receiving end.  My heart is filled with love as I give freely to them, not expecting anything in return.

As followers of Christ we are commanded to not only give freely, but to also give with a cheerful heart.  2 Corinthians 8:7 notes, “Since you excel in so many ways-you have so much faith, such gifted speakers, such knowledge, such enthusiasm, and such love for us-now I want you to excel also in this gracious ministry of giving.”  Our heavenly Father has equipped us with the knowledge of His word and we are to apply that in the form of giving to others as well as giving back to Him through tithing to the church.  While we are to give and help others, the amount we give is not nearly as significant as the reason behind our giving.  We are to give with a Christ-like spirit, a cheerful heart and ready hands.  As we give abundantly to others our Father is in heaven smiling silently, with a heart full of joy as His children unite in His name to graciously serve others.

Reflect:

  • As you tithe to the church are you signing your check with a joyful heart or a begrudging hand?
  • What ways is God calling you to give to people around you?
