Don’t Forget the Foundation

We live in a nation that is fascinated with the visible. Smartphones, skyscrapers, and stylish cars--we are drawn to what we see and impressed by what those things can do for us. It’s not until our smartphones break or buildings fall that we pay attention to what we can’t see--the foundation.

When things on the surface don’t work, we look below the surface to find out what went wrong and how to fix it. But sometimes it is the fact that we’ve neglected to take care of the things below the surface that causes the problems in the first place.

In 1 Corinthians 3, Paul warned the Corinthians to make sure to take care of their foundation--the unseen areas of their life that everything else is built on. “Each one should build with care,” Paul said. He wanted to make sure that the Corinthians were careful to build their lives on something that wouldn’t break or crumble--Jesus.

It is easy to fall into the trap of surface-level living. But if we don’t take time to take care of the foundation--our relationship with Jesus--what we build on top will struggle to stand.

  • How can you take time to focus on spending time with God and caring for your “foundation?”
  • How can you rely on God when things on the surface seem to crumble?
