Psalm 24

Tithing has never been an issue in my family. It is something my parents did without fail. We grew up hearing about tithing. I tithed off my first paycheck. My wife and I never failed to give 10 percent of our gross income to our church. There are probably lots of people like us who are faithful to tithe. But, to say that we tithe doesn’t mean we’ve always been obedient in how we handle our money. Many people erroneously feel that 10 percent belongs to God, and we can do whatever we want with the rest. True biblical stewardship is acknowledging that He owns it all.

Obedience in the area of finances is about 100 percent not 10 percent. We all have work to do in this area. Our struggle is not about honoring God with the tithe. It’s about honoring God with everything. When we hear a message about kindness, it’s easy to satisfy our guilt by being kind one time. Stewardship is different. Tithing once is not tithing. Being a good steward once, is not good stewardship. We are called to consistently honor God in the area of finances.

True financial freedom is achieved when Christ has control over every cent, every day. The question for each of us is, does He?
