First Step

We all have a next step.

Most of the time our next steps are personal and individual, but for every follower of Jesus, the first step of obedience that we are called to take after salvation is baptism.

In Matthew 3, Jesus came to John to be baptized. John’s reaction was similar to what ours probably would be as well. He could not believe that the God of the universe would come to him to be baptized. He believed Jesus should baptize him, not the other way around. However, Jesus knew that by being baptized, He was setting an important example for His followers.

There are many reasons for baptism. It communicates to the people around us that we are now followers of Christ. It is also a symbol of the new life that we have in Christ. Even if those reasons did not exist, however, it would be enough that Jesus was baptized and instructed us to do so as well.

Baptism does not save us, but it is the first step that we are directed to take after we ask Christ into our hearts. Maybe your next step is this first step. Baptism is an important step of obedience that every follower of Christ is called to take. Whether you just became a Christian or you have been a Christian for years and you have not been baptized by immersion since you received Christ, baptism is your next step.

Reflect:

  • If you know that your next step is baptism, what has been holding you back?
  • If you have already been baptized since your salvation, is the Lord speaking to you about another next step? What is it? Is there anything holding you back from taking it today?
